Philosophy Debuts Their Newest Skin Savior – Full of Promise

%image_alt%

For centuries and centuries, women have been trying desperately to defy the hands of time and stop the effects of aging. Sure, not all of us can age gracefully, try as we might, and time isn’t kind to all of us, no matter how many face yoga exercises you practice. But that doesn’t mean we have to suck it up and accept our skin’s gradual lack of elasticity and youthfulness, nor does it mean we need to shell out thousands on pricey professional treatments. Enter Philosophy’s latest skin treatment, Full of Promise – a cream treatment designed to help hydrate, support collagen, and restore volume and elasticity to skin that has lost firmness and flexibility due to the effects of aging. Simply apply after cleansing in the morning (and/or at night if you need a little extra help), and skin will look and feel lifted, smooth, supple, and even more defined. It may not be a miracle worker (that’s a different Philosophy product, come to think of it), but it sure beats letting time take a toll on your skin, unprotected!

5 Ways to Wear the 2016 Pantone Colors of The Year

2016 pantone colors of the year

It’s time to meet the 2016 Pantone Color of the Year or should I say 2016 Pantone ‘Colors’ of the Year. Nope, there’s no mistake. The experts at Pantone, announced not one, but two colors for the first time ever. The color authority chose the color combos of blush pink Rose Quartz and soft blue Serenity. Two calming pastel colors reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

Rose Quartz is described as:

a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.

…;and Serenity is:

weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

I’m obsessed with both and no matter which color you prefer, you’ll want to check out the several ways to style them below!

How to Wear 2016 Pantone Colors of The Year

  1. I love how she played with different shades of Serenity in this look. The soft blue sweater pairs beautifully with the traditional pastel blue coat.

DIY Letter Art

I was on Facebook recently when I saw a page belonging to a local woman who has set up her own business making letter art. Her work was beautifully done, with each letter crafted in an individual pattern and conforming to an overall theme, giving it a kitschy, arty feel that I loved. I thought how fabulous they would look on my little boys shelves in his room, but the only way I could afford the price per letter she asked would be to change my sons name to something with only two letters. So, whats a thrifty gal with great taste to do (except break out the baby name book)? Ask Google, of course! A little stealthy sleuth work turned up this guide from Caught On a Whim which demonstrates an oh so easy way to create your own block letters in any style. My child can keep his full seven letter name without having to live with bare shelves, and I can enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that Ive created an object of beauty at a fraction of the retail price!

The Curative Properties of Grapes

Grapes are small round fruit. Some types have seeds but some are seedless. Grapes contain a lot of nutrients and healthy ingredients, but one of the important medical ingredients is resveratrol.

Resveratrol, which can be found in red and purple grapes, is the main ingredient of this delicious fruit which has beneficial effect on the heart, maintains our optimal weight and helps the prevention of this “illness” and protects the skin from damage caused by sun tanning . This sweet fruit has many medical properties. Some of them are listed below:

Protects The Heart
Studies has shown that resveratrol is capable of spreading the blood vessels in order to facilitate blood flow. It also loosens up the walls of blood vessels, making their diameter larger. Thus improves circulation and affects the lower pressure, and carries nutrients and oxygen to each cell in the body.

Helps losing weight and maintains healthy weight

Dr. Fera Merien of the University of Georgia found that resveratrol (especially in combination with soy isoflavones) helps in two ways: it helps the body lose weight: it reduces the ability of cells to store fat by about 130% and causes the disintegration of fat cells for 246% more than usual.

Prevents the formation of plaque that damages brain
A research conducted by Swiss University proved that resveratrol protects brain. Specifically, it prevents the formation of plaque that damages the brain and is associated with Alzheimer ‘s disease.

Improves brain function
One British study, found that resveratrol increases blood flow to the brain by 200%. Researchers believe that resveratrol can help to accelerate the thinking process.

Protects skin from cancer
Numerous studies have shown that resveratrol protects the skin from UVB radiation, which is one of the factor causing skin cancer.

Protects the body from radiation
This powerful ingredient protects the body during radiation therapy and relieves its negative effects.

Affects longevity
In one study, scientists have identified resveratrol as an ingredient that activates the gene responsible for the maintenance and longevity.

Helps in diabetes cases
The study of Albert Einstein College of Medicine showed that people who were in pre diabetic condition and who were given resveratrol, had a drop of 10% of the sugar level in the blood.

Relieves inflammation
Resveratrol acts anti-inflammatory as well – it is one of the reasons why it can be effective in preventing heart disease.

Encourages muscle recovery
As a powerful antioxidant, resveratrol helps in the elimination of uric acid and other toxins from the cells and organs, thus promoting muscle recovery in athletes.

Food n Fitness Friday: Quinoa & Chicken Salad

Is it really Friday already? Its been another one of those busy weeks for me. Alright, when is it NOT a busy week for me? Things have been hectic given the celebration of my fiances birthday. So in addition to the time that has been devoted to that, the diet hasnt exactly been on par all week. I tried, I really did.

We tried out a newer place in Milwaukee called Carsons which is actually a restaurant out of Chicago. I was pleasantly surprised by it! Its an upscale but casual restaurant that specializes in ribs. I actually had a charred pork chop, and no joke, it was about 4 inches thick and pretty delicious! On top of the amazing dinner I ate a piece of chocolate cake. I know, horrible of me. Its not a birthday celebration without cake.

Next week Ill be back on the horse, promise. Yesterday was my final day of Advocare after 24 days. My final review is that I do feel better but I am unsure if I can actually link it back to Advocare or if its because Ive been generally eating better and working out more. The 24 Day Challenge is a lot of work and a lot of supplement consumption. Im glad thats over. Now its time to move on to another 6 week program that Im doing through my gym that involves a diet of carb-cycling. Wish me luck!

Quinoa & Chicken Salad | foodnfocus.com

My lunch this week consisted of this tasty Quinoa and Chicken Salad. It has taken me a bit to get on board with quinoa because of the texture but its so good for you thats its hard to avoid. I suggest pairing this salad with a toasted pita and a sprinkle of feta if you want a little extra oomph!

Have a great weekend everyone!

A Stimulating Solution for Binge Eating and Weight Loss!

120075375While the thought of deep brain stimulation may bring scary visions to mind of psychiatric patients in straight jackets, it has actually proven to be a helpful treatment therapy for a number of different neurological symptoms. And now, in our current fight against the pandemic of obesity and our personal battles with binge eating and weight loss, there appears to be some evidence that this procedure could offer hope in these areas as well.

What is Deep Brain Stimulation?

Deep brain stimulation (or DBS) therapy uses a surgically implanted battery-operated device, similar to a pacemaker. Once implanted, it delivers electrical stimulation to a specifically targeted area of the brain. For example, in the case of Parkinsons disease patients who experience tremors, the target area for DBS is the section of the brain that controls movement. The electrical current produced from the device blocks abnormal nerve signals that cause tremors for Parkinsons disease sufferers.

Weight Loss with Brain Stimulation?

A new study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania shows that deep brain stimulation in a specific area of the brain seems to lead to weight loss in obese animals. The scientists involved in the experiment say the stimulation appears to reinforce the involvement of dopamine shortages in increasing behavior like binge eating. Testing showed that brain stimulation could reverse binge eating through the activation of the dopamine type-2 receptor.

During the study, the researchers targeted a small area in the reward centre of the brain known for addictive behavior. Mice receiving the stimulation consumed a lot less high-fat food than the mice who did not receive any deep brain stimulation. On days when the stimulation device was turned off, the implanted mice resumed their binge eating.

The testing went a step further by examining the long-term impact of deep brain stimulation on mice that had been given unlimited access to high-fat foods. The mice who received DBS consumed fewer calories and experienced considerable weight loss. The animals showed a big improvement in their glucose sensitivity, leading researchers to believe this could hold potential for the reversal of type-2 diabetes.

This study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, is the first of its kind to show that deep brain stimulation can be successfully used to stop harmful behaviors like binge eating, and can lead to effective weight loss. The next step for the Penn-U researchers is to pursue human trials. They are hopeful, for other studies involving DBS are already on the verge of proving positive weight loss results in human subjects.

DBS could be a Safe Solution for Weight Loss

While the researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have demonstrated positive results with stimulation in mice, another U.S university has also made significant strides in human research.

Just a few years ago, the FDA gave the University of West Virginia approval to move forward with a clinical human study on deep brain stimulation in morbidly obese individuals. Under tightly controlled guidelines, only 3 patients were approved for the study. Electrodes were surgically placed in the feeding centre of the brain, and the patients have been monitored for 2 years now. So far, the results show successful weight loss for 2 of the patients, with no adverse side effects due to the procedure. While the authors were encouraged by the findings, they admit that a larger study group is needed.

Solving the Global Problem of Binge Eating and Weight Control

Researchers say that deep brain stimulation could work in the treatment of binge eating in different ways. One theory is that it simply reduces the craving for food. Another possibility is that it accelerates metabolism. One of the patients who participated in the University of West Virginia study went on national television 9 weeks after her procedure, stating that she didnt have cravings anymore and had already lost close to 12 pounds.

While brain surgery sounds like a dramatically drastic approach for many, doctors say that the risks associated with DBS are minimal, and with proper patient selection, can prove to be quite successful. At the present time, weight loss strategies like diet programs, weight loss drugs and even gastric bypass surgery have not been able to work successfully for everyone. With the obesity epidemic continuing to grow, and binge eating and weight management continuing to be pressing issues for the general population, finding new methods for weight control are especially important before this global problem spins completely out of our control.

Top 10 Color Trends for Fall/Winter 2015-2016

fall 2015 color trends

Image: Pantone

Pantone has released the top shades for fall/winter 2015-2016. With earthy tones like Dried Herb and Stormy Weather and bold colors like Cashmere Rose and Cadmium Orange, expect a lot of fun color combinations with contrasting shades of natural and bright.

According to Pantone, designers are “paying homage to progressive moments in American History from the seductive ‘20s to the bohemian hippie and modernists of the ‘60s and ‘70s” while putting together colors that are easy to wear for men and women.

“Juxtaposition of color from opposite sides of the spectrum emphasizes poise and confidence on the runway,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “The Fall 2015 palette is rooted in multi-faceted, androgynous colors that can be worn to portray effortless sophistication across men’s and women’s fashion; it is the first time we are seeing a truly unisex color palette.”

I love the earthy and bright combo for the upcoming fall and winter season. The contrast between the two creates such great energy. I can’t wait to update my fall wardrobe and add these gorgeous colors!
